about me

Hi there, I’m Janine (she/her)

I have worked in complex trauma and social work for over 17 years, supporting individuals, children, and families across hospital, community, and private practice settings. Growing up in South Africa shaped my worldview and deepened my respect for difference, resilience, and the importance of accessible care. I began in psychology before intentionally switching into social work so that I could work directly with people in the context of their lives and within family structures.

I support adults and adolescents (16+) navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship stress, identity questions, life transitions, and grief. I also work with people impacted by single-incident and complex trauma, including domestic and family violence, sexual assault, and childhood sexual abuse that may be resurfacing later in life.

While I have extensive experience working with trauma, many people I work with are simply feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to see me. If it matters to you, it matters here.

My experience spans mental health, child protection, fostering and adoption, disability services, court-based settings, and specialist trauma services. I spent over 12 years working directly with children and adolescents aged 0–16, as well as adults, building a strong foundation in child development, attachment, and family systems. More recently, I worked in a hospital setting as a senior domestic and family violence clinician, providing ongoing trauma-informed therapy to victim-survivors and contributing to safe, coordinated responses in high-risk contexts.

I have extensive experience with children and families impacted by domestic and family violence, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment and exploitation in the workplace, and attachment disruption, and support parents and carers navigating behavioural challenges and family stress. My practice experience includes neurodevelopmental and behavioural presentations such as ADHD, autism spectrum presentations, OCD, and highly distressed behaviour. I am trained in Circle of Security, Tuning in to Kids, and Black Box Parenting, which provides me with a wide scope to provide support to adolescents and parents navigating challenges.

I also support individuals exploring or affirming their sexual orientation within established heterosexual relationships, including those navigating coming out later in life or within mixed-orientation partnerships. My practice is LGBTQIA+ affirming and grounded in respect for culture, spirituality, sexuality, and belief systems.

At the heart of my work is a therapeutic relationship that is clinically grounded and deeply human. I bring warmth, curiosity, humour, and clarity into the room, and work at a pace that feels safe and manageable. You are welcome here!

Your Therapy Journey

What to expect

Session Structure

Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes, held weekly or bi-weekly depending on your needs and preferences. We create a consistent schedule to support your progress. I do offer longer sessions if this is

Therapist Match

If you don't feel a connection with me in the first 1-2 sessions, that’s ok, I can help you find someone more suited to your unique needs.

Your Pace

There's no "right" way to do therapy. We move at your pace, addressing what feels most important to you in each moment. You're always in control.

Confidentiality

Your privacy is sacred. Everything discussed in therapy is completely confidential, with very limited legal exceptions (such as immediate danger to yourself or others).

Backed By Research

Why individual therapy works

Undivided attention & personalisation

Your therapist focuses entirely on your needs. Every intervention is tailored to your unique situation, history, and goals—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

A witness to your story

Being truly heard by another person can create an atmosphere for healing to take place. Your therapist holds your narrative with compassion and without judgment.

Scientific backing

Individual psychotherapy is one of the most thoroughly researched interventions in mental health. It's shown to improve anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, and overall life satisfaction.

Common concerns

  • I work at a slow and steady pace using trauma informed approaches, and you remain in control. We do not have to go into painful memories to begin supporting you.

  • That's completely normal, especially early on. I will help guide the conversation and ask questions that create space for reflection.

  • There's no fixed timeline. Some people find relief in 8-12 sessions; others work with a therapist for years. We'll regularly check in on your progress and goals.
