my approach

Therapy doesn’t have to feel like too much. It can feel steady, supportive and contained.

about me

Hi there, I’m Janine (she/her)

I have worked in mental health, complex trauma, and social work for over 17 years, supporting individuals, children, and families across hospital, community, and private practice settings. Growing up in South Africa shaped my worldview and deepened my respect for difference, resilience, and the importance of accessible care. I began in psychology before intentionally switching into social work so that I could work directly with people in the context of their lives.

I support adults and adolescents (16+) navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship stress, identity questions, life transitions, and grief. I also work with people impacted by single-incident and complex trauma, including domestic and family violence, sexual assault, and childhood sexual abuse that may be resurfacing later in life.

While I have extensive experience working with trauma, many people I work with are simply feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to come to therapy. If it matters to you, it matters here.

My experience spans mental health, child protection, fostering and adoption, disability services, court-based settings, and specialist trauma services. I spent over 12 years working directly with children and adolescents aged 0–16, as well as adults, building a strong foundation in child development, attachment, and family systems. More recently, I worked in a hospital setting as a senior domestic and family violence clinician, providing ongoing trauma-informed therapy to victim-survivors and contributing to safe, coordinated responses in high-risk contexts.

I have extensive experience with children and families impacted by domestic and family violence, child sexual abuse, exploitation, and attachment disruption, and support parents and carers navigating behavioural challenges and family stress. My practice experience includes neurodevelopmental and behavioural presentations such as ADHD, autism spectrum presentations, OCD, and highly distressed behaviour. I am trained in Circle of Security, Tuning in to Kids, and Black Box Parenting which provides me with a wide scope to provide support to adolescents and parents navigating challenges.

I offer an inclusive and affirming therapeutic space for people of diverse cultural backgrounds, belief systems, sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship histories, including those navigating identity, sexuality, and mixed-orientation relationships.

At the heart of my work is a therapeutic relationship that is clinically grounded and deeply human. I bring warmth, curiosity, humour, and clarity into the room, and work at a pace that feels safe and manageable. You are welcome here!

Guiding principles

What shapes my approach.

Clarity with Compassion

Honest conversations, held gently

I believe clarity is a form of compassion. I won’t leave you guessing about what I’m noticing, what might help, or how we’re working together. At the same time, I approach every conversation with care, respect, and sensitivity to your lived experience. Therapy is most effective when it feels both honest and safe.

Your Wisdom First

You are the expert on your own life.

My role is not to direct or fix you, but to walk alongside you with evidence-based tools, clinical insight, and curiosity. We work at your pace, guided by your goals, values, and readiness, with decisions that are shaped collaboratively through the therapeutic process.

Strength in Relationship

Growth through connection.

A strong therapeutic relationship is central to effective therapy. I aim to create a safe, respectful, and consistent space, guided by clear boundaries, ethical practice, and professional responsibility, where reflection and meaningful change can unfold over time.

Whether you’re carrying the weight of the past or simply feeling overwhelmed in the present, you’re welcome here.

It’s natural to feel hesitant about opening up.

Many people worry about what may surface, the impact of strong emotions, or whether therapy will feel manageable alongside everyday life. With over 17 years of experience in complex trauma, I support this work using evidence-informed approaches, and work closely with you whilst paying close attention to pacing and stability.

We Heal is a space that is both clinically grounded and profoundly human.

I created We Heal to offer therapy that is professional, evidence-based, and shaped by years of clinical experience, while also being warm, compassionate, and real. I offer a non-judgmental space and hold deep respect for culture, belief, spirituality, sexuality, and the many ways people make meaning of their lives. I bring warmth, clarity and a bit of humour into the room whilst remaining trauma-informed. I aim to meet you first and foremost as a person, with therapy paced around your needs, choices, and readiness.
